Everyone should be able to afford the essentials we all need to live on.

And we know you’re working tirelessly to support people in your local communities facing impossible decisions as the cost of living continues to soar and bite hard. This isn’t right.

If we are going to work together towards our shared vision of a UK without the need for food banks and a more just society where everyone has enough money to live with dignity, then we need systems like social security to be strengthened so that they pull people of out of hardship, rather than plunging them deeper into poverty.

The support package announced by the UK government in May to tackle the increasing cost of living, targeted to people on the lowest incomes, was an important step in the right direction – but we know this isn’t enough and, collectively, we must keep pushing for change. Longer term, this means that we need a social security system that can provide a strong and stable lifeline, whenever any of us need support and are struggling to make ends meet.
