Sharon, a much-loved volunteer at Edinburgh Food Project, was nominated a local hero at the Scottish Parliament opening ceremony on Saturday 27 June 2026. Their Majesties The King and Queen joined MSPs and “local hero” guests at the official event.
Sharon is a lively, friendly and compassionate member of the team, who began volunteering with Edinburgh Food Project in the Summer of 2024. She was at a point in her life where she wanted to give something back to her community. She initially started by making teas and coffees for people using the food bank, but it quickly became clear that her talents and skills could be used in many other ways. Sharon soon progressed to supporting people with vouchers and registration, helping with food shopping, and assisting with stock control.
“Sharon is a local hero in every sense of the word; you cannot walk down the street with Sharon in Craigmillar without bumping into one of her many neighbours or friends! Sharon is a great person to work with, I’m so grateful for her help and support, and I’ll admit sometimes I quite enjoy her jokes!” – Catherine Fyfe, Volunteer Coordinator, Edinburgh Food Project.
Through Sharon’s contributions, the Craigmillar foodbank has been strengthened, and we are incredibly grateful for her time, dedication and kindness. We are delighted that Sharon has received this award in recognition of the difference she makes and the care she shows to others.
“I’ve been volunteering with Edinburgh Food Project for over two years, I thought I’ll start with making teas and coffees but one day they were a bit short, so I jumped in and helped with the other tasks and helping others in the community, and the rest is history! It was overwhelming to be nominated to be a local hero, I had a great day at the opening ceremony meeting the King and Queen and making new friends.” – Sharon, Volunteer
